Challenge: Death

Title: Static
Rating: PG
Word count: 135
Challenge: Death
Bonuses: none, but a Gold Star for not including Sasuke
A/N: Spoilers for Tsunade's past!

(Nawaki is dead, dead and cold,) and another heart is still under Tsunade’s slender hands. It’s only a scratch, the young man had said, bloodied lips curling to a smile. Just a scratch, please, let me be. The others need you more.

They always do (and Nawaki is dead, dead and cold,) and Tsunade is working, fingers leaving red marks on too pale and cooling skin. Finally there’s nothing to do and she gets up only to kneel again beside the next one.

Life has to go on (though Nawaki is dead, dead and cold,) and Tsunade knows it. They need her to heal, to fight and to know when to give up. When to close blind eyes and move forward.

But Nawaki is dead, dead and cold, and in her heart Tsunade is still.

The repetition is both haunting and lyrical. I applaud you for your beautiful drabble.

Thank you! This was a rather experimental drabble as far as style goes, so I'm glad to know that you liked it. :)

It's no secret that I love repetition in stories. If well done it can do wonders for a story, no matter its length. I simply love the way you repeated "Nawaki is dead, dead and cold" as it brings forth what Tsunade is really stuck on, keeping her from truly focusing on her task, and preventing her from getting emotionally involved with the people who she is losing underneath her fingertips. For better and worse, I suppose.
Also, Tsunade is a character that I, at least, don't often see a lot of fics about, so a plus for that too :)

Thank you very much! I'm really glad that the repetition worked like I wanted it to. :)

And you're right about Tsunade, I haven't seen many fics about her either. It's a pity because she's an interesting character.
